Gothmog, the First Lord of Balrogs, was the High-captain of Angband and one of the main lieutenants of Morgoth in the Wars of Beleriand. Because of his powerful abilities and slayings of many famous Elven lords, he quickly made himself noteworthy as Morgoth's general on the front-line. He was famous for wielding a great black axe into battle, a weapon wreathed in poisonous ash and shadow-like smoke, and this axe was responsible for unnumbered fatalities.
His most famous exploits happened during Dagor-nuin-Giliath, during which he mortally-wounded Feanor, Nirnaeth Arnoediad, when he slew Fingon and captured Hurin Thalion, and the Fall of Gondolin, where he was deployed as the commander of Morgoth's forces - and slew and was slain by Echtelion of the Fountain.
