Description[]

Isengard, also known as Angrenost, was an old place in the Wizard's Vale, Nan Curunír, in the land called Calenardhon. It was built around the tower of Orthanc by the Dúnedain of Gondor during the kingship of Elendil.

The Dunlendings[]

Many years after the death of Eärnur, the last king of Gondor, when the power of Minas Tirith dwindled, and Calenardhon was given to the Rohirrim, the Hillmen from Dunland led by Freca, son of Drust, conquered Isengard. They allied with the orcs from the Misty Mountains who dug their secret tunnels under Orthanc and killed a few gondorian soldiers that stayed in the tower. Freca became the Lord of Isengard, joined with the Corsairs of Umbar, and they together attacked the kingdoms of Rohan and Gondor. However, they were defeated by Helm, the King of Rohan, and Beregond, the Steward of Gondor.

Saruman's Rule[]

When the Dunlendings were evicted by Fréaláf, the new King of Rohan, Saruman the White, a powerful wizard, came from his journeys from the far East to Orthanc. He found there one of the Palantíri, and used it to fall under the power of Sauron. He began to fortify Isengard and allied with Vulf, son of Jorjan, son of Freca. Saruman's men and orcs, who came from all their cities all over Middle-Earth, gave live to the first Uruk-hai of the White Hand and prepared to war. A dunlending called Ikeug became the first Steward of Orthanc. This time, Saruman was known as Saruman of Many Colours. The armies of the White Hand of Saruman then attacked Rohan and killed Théodred, son of the King Théoden. Thus the War of the Ring began in Calenardhon.

After the War of the Ring[]

During the War of the Ring, Saruman of Many Colours was driven out from Angrenost, defeated, and killed by the hobbits of the Shire, Isengard was conquered and flooded by the Trees, and Éomer became the new king of Rohan. Aragorn Elessar was crowned the first king of the Reunited Kingdom of Gondor and Arnor, and he gave Isengard to the Trees. However, the Trees, led by Treebeard, wanted to go to the Forests of Fangorn and Enedwaith that were both cruelly damaged by Saruman's lumberjacks. They gave Angrenost to Alatar the Blue and Pallando the Green, two wizards, and former Saruman's prisoners, and quit. After the last battle against the remaining hostile forces, Alatar and Pallando ousted all servants of Saruman from Angrenost and made Lód the Steward of Orthanc.
