Biography[]

Young days[]

Maethoriel was the third child of Vaeril and Caladwen, born in T.A. 240 in Ailinosto. Since her birth, she was supposed to be a sort of " peace child " between Ñoldor and Sindar races. Maethoriel was immediatly set as Legolas' future wife by Thranduil who offered his son's hand in exchange of an eternal peace and friendship ( even if, after Vaerils death, Thranduil disliked the Ñoldor kin as a whole (despite forgetting that the last survivors of Ailinosto fled to his realm were Ñoldors, and that Maethoriel was Fëanor's descent). Maethoriel, as a peace child, lived between Mirkwood and Ailinosto. Every two years, she traveled to Mirkwood. Thranduil almost treated her as his own, along withLuthien . Pretty much because of her kin, Maethoriel had a huge strength and displayed powers, such as water and fire control.

Among humans[]

Maeden

Maethoriel and Theroden in Rohan during a meeting

At the age of twenty, Maethoriel was send to Rohan to follow a military training ordered by humans. She was recevieved as a simple pilgrim by the king Theodwyn in Paviran but was immediatly taken under his care because his son, Eradred, was about the same age physically. Maethoriel was still a child when Eradred was crowned King of Rohan at the age of ten, following the death of Theodwyn. Maethoriel was left traumatised when Eradred died during a sword fight at the age of twenty seven, leaving his four year old son, Theodonem. Maethoriel raised the boy and taught him to speak elvish, the boy did not rule Rohan, leaving politics to one of his father's generals and close friend. Theodonem was crowned King of Rohan in T.A. 307 at the age of twenty. After three years, Maethoriel assisted to Theroden's birth in T.A. 310 and then, two years later, to Olawyn's birth. Following the loss of his wife, Matheroriel helped Theodonem to raise his children and became a mother-figure to both of them.

Years passing, she fell in love for Theroden but was unable to spend more time with him. She even wanted to leave her immortality to be with him for a short life, forgetting about the rules of her own race and about her position as a Princess. As she prayed Manwë to let her immortality vanish, to which the Ainu responded negatively. A long war started between two human lands, and her and Theroden were involved in the conflict. The prince was killed by other human forces in T.A. 330 at the age of twenty. Theodonem, incredibly shocked and despaired by the loss of his son, desired Maethoriel to come back to Ailinosto to avoid her any more suffering. Maethoriel first refused, but was conviced by Theodonem who simply told her that her life in Rohan would be in despair because she would watch the ones she loved die one by one, while she would stand alone among their graves. Maethoriel came back to Ailinosto in late T.A. 330, deeply wounded by the death of the one she called "First of the Dearest". Two years later, she learnt that Olawyn passed away, and joined Rohan to assist to her burial before being called back to her duties.

Peacefull days[]

Maethoriel was not fond of the way her father reacted to her love towards mankind, resulting in frequent arguments and her departure to Rivendell. In T.A.331, Maethoriel traveled to Rivendell alone, after the departure of her mother to Lothlórien. She spent ten years in Rivendell before heading to Mirkwood to live with Thranduil, Legolas and Luthien before Vaeril himself came to get her with a sample of his army. Maethoriel was not able to see her younger brothers Maidhion and Maldor a long time due to their military service. After Caladwen's return, Maethoriel tried to remain in good terms with her father who was, following her departure to Mirkwood, reluctant towards her union with Legolas. During some celebrations, Maethoriel offered Legolas to visit the sanctuary of Arda, next to her city in order to show him more about her culture and traditions. There, she saw the ghosts of Fëanor and his sons, and even Finwë who told her that she was going to be the first High Queen of Ñoldor instead of her older siblings.

Thranduil displayed a soft attitude towards Maethoriel, mostly because he took pity of her and of the way she was often treated. During her stays in Mirkwood, he frequently watched over her, presumably because of her attitude. Maethoriel disliked her position and often displayed a behaviour that was close to a soldier's one, mostly because she was trained to be one.

ValMae

During a small time, Valaina and Maethoriel grew fond of one other. They enjoyed spending their time in their room only talking, drawing or training themselves to sing and write poems. Maethoriel shared Valaina's love for figures and loved spending time with dwares to see how they made them to then tell everything to her older sister. She created a strong bond with dwares of Moria, which was comon among their people because of Maedhros' ideas of peace among races.

The relationship between the two sisters grew deeper with time. Maethoriel found in Valaina the love her mother never gave her. Maethoriel loved to spend time with him and chose to stay in Ailinosto, to stay with her brothers and sister. She usually watched over Maidhion and Maldor during their trainings with Vehiron. Her attitude surprised thes Elves of Lothlorien. Maethoriel took her first responsabilities in her city by being offered a regiment of sword fighters. The royal family frenquently traveled to Mirkwood to assist to official events such as Feast of Starlight. In TA 526, they traveled to Mirkwood with their brother Manwë who was born during a Feast of Starlight. Legolas and Maethoriel's engagment became a public matter, despite Vaeril never truly said a word this subject. Maethoriel was reffered to as Prince Legolas' Promise.

ValMae2

The era of peace did not last. The snatch of Manwë caused Maethoriel to grow enraged. She led her regiment in order to find her youngest brother, despite all her efforts were vain. By that time, she had a few visions of Sauron himself, beating her near a large hill and stabbing her with his sword numerous times. She began reflecting on her true importance among her people but the confidence of Vaeril regarding the fact that she was the deadliest heir he could have because she had faced death made her remain in Ailinosto and gather armies.

Lanthir Auth[]

During the Lanthir Auth, Maethoriel was on the first line, holding the rule of a general of several regiments she directed. She was the first woman of the army who wore the male Ñoldor armor. Her mother and her sister were wearing female typed armors with the insign of the Royal Family on it. Before the first part of the battle, Vaeril confessed to his daughter that he saw what she was going to be and asked her to fight until the end of the battle so she would

access to a possible throne. Maethoriel fought with an elite of elves to Dargolad, then traveled to Emyn Muil to help her father and his regiments. Nevertheless, the King was injured and his troops were run over by orcs. Under the protection of her sister, Maethoriel fought among the last survivors of the battle. Valaina got shot by several arrows, Maethoriel's madness turning into a weapon, making her look like Fëanor himself. Maethoriel's father died in her arms, she, along with some last survivors, bitterly carried several corpses on the main battlefield of Dargolad and placed them in line, not far from Mirkwood. She was the main cause of Thranduil's despair because her mother and her father were among the bodies displayed first. Somewhat exhausted, Maethoriel joined her brothers and was taken by orcs as a captive.

Captivity in Mordor[]

During her first decades of captivity, Maethoriel's health dwindled. Sauron used his powers to drain her energy to force an union with her. Vehiron chose to call for him. Maethoriel was longly tortured. Sauron threatened her to eliminate her people one by one, the more she would resist. Maethoriel resisted, despite fearing for the life of her people. Elves of the prison tried to live normaly, raising children. Maethoriel enjoyed taking care of a girl named Valadhiel following her parents' execution. However, Sauron chose to sacrifice Valadhiel in front her so she would accept his union, but Maethoriel remained strong. At the same time, Vehiron adopted a boy called Eglerion and treated him as his own son. Maidhion and Maldor tried to organise the way of living in Mordor instead of their sister.

Sauron chose to kill Eglerion. However, Vehiron demanded to sacrifice himself instead of his adoptive son. Maethoriel refused him to go, Sauron forced her to stay on the ground. Some years later, after a long agony, Vehiron was killed by Maethoriel. Sauron ordered her to choose between her brother or a union, Maethoriel chose the brother. The lady was haunted by her brother's death. By this brutal death, she understood why her father used to say she was the "deadlisest" of the children.

Maethoriel got pregnant by Sauron's distant powers and gave birth to a boy she named Finris, in T.A. 942. After twenty five years, her child was taken away from her by Sauron, feeling the need to raise him as a soldier among orcs. This left Maethoriel in a great distraught. She expected her union with Sauron would keep her and her people alive. Maedhros' spirit appeared in front of her, showing her what her life would be if she remained in Mordor. She would live in pain, giving birth to Sauron's second offspring, kill some jailed elves one by one until the War of the Ring, comitting suicide with her brothers after all mistakes they made. This vision made Maethoriel feel the need to stop it all, she elaborated a plan to escape from Mordor. Her brothers formed groups to create wooden weapons. Maethoriel manipulated an invisible energy and started to use it to hide her people. Orcs were killed, their gards too, Maethoriel ran to the central throne room to fight with Sauron. The dark lord showed her his real face and, while Maethoriel tried to kill him, injured her on the chest by a poisonned sword. She injured Sauron on the stomach, runing away from Mordor with all people who escaped.

The first High Queen of Ñoldors[]

Their trip made them go by Minas Morgul, Nindalf, West Enmet and The Wold. While they were at the Wold, Treebeard chose to help and sheltered them in Fangorn. He carried Maethoriel and healed her injuries, Maidhion ordered Eglerion to run to Mirkwood to tell Thranduil that they were coming back. Treebeard offered Eglerion to lead him to Mirkwood, something the young elf accepted. Eglerion ran in the whole forest with no fear and arrived at the realm to tell Thranduil that elves of Ailinosto were coming back. Soon after this, other trees led elves to Mirkwood. Thranduil deployed patrols to catch them on their way and help them to reach the Woodland Realm.

Wedding

Legolas and Maethoriels wedding in Mirkwood

Maethoriel was recognised by some soldiers who carried her to the realm behind her brothers. In Mirkwood, Thranduil didn't recognise her and locked her in his room with her brothers, leaving all surivors to servants and healers. Maethoriel was mostly healed by Galadriel. The war and captivity had left Maethoriel weaker. Some months following her return, Maethoriel was presented to Legolas and Luthien as a miracle.

Maethoriel was called to be the future queen of Ñoldors. She lived a double ceremony at the same day. The emblematic way to settle the peace between sons of Feanor and Mirkwood was that the coronation would be settled in Mirkwood and, soon after this coronation, the union between a Ñoldo and Sinda would be held. This very unique union was the first to take place within two royal families (Calathiel was not a Ñoldor, but a Teleri and Vanyar). To settle an eternal peace between her kin and the Sinda, Maethoriel offered the Ring of Fëanor, her dearest herritage, to Thranduil as a sign of devotion. However, Maethoriel had to give her queen role up inside Mirkwood because of her wedding with Legolas, being a prince. This made Maethoriel the un-official queen of Ñoldors. Maethoriel soon gave birth to her first son called Finror .

MaethorielBur

Finris however died at the age of twenty-four, killed by giant spiders while he was sneaking out from the realm all alone. Maethoriel fell in deep despair without anybody to comfort her because of Legolas' absence in a patrol. During the burial, Maethoriel saw numerous visions of her son and the last time she saw him, his ghost was in Varda's hands who told her that she must stop the curse to bring him back to the real world. The death of Finror covered the whole Woodland Realm with a dark veil, women did not have the permission to wear flowers in their hair and men did no longer talk loudly, they would not even be allowed to laugh. Maethoriel stoped wearing her long colorfull gowns and tied her hair in a long braid for a long while. She refused to participate to any celebrations, remaining in front of the river with Legolas before being drawn back to her duties by Thranduil. Twelve years after her son's death, Finris came to Mirkwood.

In TA 2150, Maethoriel and Maglor headed to the Nothern Moutains to perform the sacrifice to break the Curse of the Broken Oath, in order to save her brother's possible children. Both of them killed a Balrog, which oppened them the gates of the World of the Valar. Manwë gave them the right to resurect one person of their choice, Maethoriel chose brought her son back, whereas Malgor chose Maedhros. Finror appeared older than what he was supposed to be when he died. In the middle of TA 2348, Maethoriel gave birth to a girl she called Ithliwen.

The Hobbit and LOTR events[]

During The Hobbit events, Maethoriel opposed herself to Thranduils hate on dwares and tried sending her patrols to Moria and Erebor as a defense. However, Thranduil stoped her before everything would start, locking her in the cells of Mirkwood with the unability to leave. Maethoriel was left traumatised by the king's revelation about the fall of Erebor. She then refused to obbey him, refused to listen to his orders. She even took part of executions on the side of Legolas. The lady, before her departure to Erebor to the Battle of Five Armies, told her children to go to Rivendell. After the battle, Legolas informed Thranduil that neither him nor Maethoriel would come back.

Before the Events of the Council in Rivendell, Maethoriel bid a farewell to her husband, unable to follow him to Rivendell because of her responsabilities and Thranduil's disagreement. Maethoriel bitterly said goodbye to Legolas, praising him to keep safe. During her husband's absence, Maethoriel was send in patrolls in the North to avoid Sauron to launch another attack. When the battle ended, she traveled to Minas Tirith to be a part of Arwen's wedding and see Legolas with her children. Luthien and Maethoriel chose to stay in Minas Tirith until the departure of Arwen to Lothlórien where she died, while Legolas went away with Gimli.

Departure to Valinor[]

Maethoriel and Luthien assisted to the death of Arwen Undomiel at Lothlórien. Both of them are wounded deeply after the loss of their friend and chose to remain for a short time in Middle Earth. Nevertheless, Legolas told them to travel with him and Gimli to Valinor. Maethoriel chose to stay in Mirkwood, and traveled to Ailinosto to say a farewell to the life tree. Maethoriel then headed to Lothlórien and bent to Celeborn, taking her children with her.

She traveled to the Grey Havens where Thranduil offered Maethoriel a golden leaf. While Legolas helped his children and newphews to climb go aboard, Thranduil told Maethoriel how much he would miss all of them, begging for his forgiveness about all mistakes he made during his whole life, something Maethoriel accepted, asking for him to come to Valinor when he will find peace in his soul to live with her kin.

Maethoriel sailed West. When they settled, Maethoriel gave the Evenstar to Elrond, telling him that Arwen wanted her to keep this to him. Galadriel then escorted Maethoriel and her brothers to the great halls of Finwë where they met Maedhros for the first time. Finarfin, as a tribute to his half brother, chose to give her his protection.

Quotes[]

"-There is a funeral over there. The wife appears to be suffocating beneath her tears. -Is that so painful to loose someone you love ? -More than painful. It just breaks you inside. I wish you never to live such thing."
―Theodwyn to young Maethoriel, TA 262[src]
"Dî i Ithil silad i elin... athar i Ithil calad silad i amar ias gwaith cuiar godref... I amar tannir na sîdh, ias i dae iaur aranen ti termanir... I ti nomë ias, mîn arad, me Nathon aldannitham oialan... ( Beneath the moon was shinning the star, beyond the moonlight was shinning the world where people are living together. A world made of peace, where the great ancient kings are standing... A place where, one day, we will be reunited forever. )"
―Maethoriel's last words to Theroden during his funeral[src]
"There is no throne where a kingdomless queen can sit. There is no people a kindgomless queen can rule. How can I even consider myself as a queen if I do not rule my own people inside this other kingdom ? Maethoriel Vaeriliel, daughter of the River, queen of the dust of Ailinosto. This is the rule I am able to handle, because there is nothing I can rule. I am just the dust of Ñoldors faith, the dust of their expectations and avidity. This is why I will not torture myself of having a rule I can not have. I am Maethoriel, princess of Mirkwood, but as long as I live, the union of my people with all races of Middle Earth will stay still. "
―Maethoriel's speech during her coronation[src]
"And this is how you fight ? Please, do not tell me that this is everything you can do ! "
―Maethoriel to Legolas during a training [src]
"Humans believe we do not feel any emotion. However, grief is the worst pain we can endure."
―Legolas mourning to his wife about his son[src]
"-You are in Mirkwood. You are not in the position to give me orders, queen of dust. I may not be pure, but compared with you, descent of Fëanor's broken oath to whom I gave my son, mother of Sauron's child, I am the light while you are just the shadow. -There is no light coming from you. -From you neither. "
―Thranduil threatning Maethoriel after the War of Erebor[src]
"-Yes. I left my whole memory in Middle Earth. My parents, my brother, my sister, my roots... And here am I. In Valinor. "
―Maethoriel to Maedhros [src]
